Q&A
DP: What were you doing before Colorkind?
JE: I first discovered art while studying marketing at Texas Christian University, where I picked up painting and design as a hobby. I found it to be a calming and fun outlet that allowed me to take creative risks and experiment. I spent the first 20 years of my career in the fashion industry at Fossil—working on everything from visual merchandising to concept design—where I was ultimately named chief creative director. I love the coming together of all things creative from concept, to product, to marketing and merchandising. In 2020, I shifted my attention to designing wallpaper, literally on a whim. We were in the midst of a home refresh, in the middle of the pandemic, and I couldn’t find a wallpaper that struck just the right balance of happy, playful, calm and organized for our powder bath. So I created my own from my painting practice. That pattern, Color Grid, was our first (and still most loved) pattern - and launched our business.
DP: What products do you currently offer?
JE: We currently offer journals and wallpapers, with fabric and rugs coming in 2023. I’m most excited about our new collection - wanderhome - in all its many forms. Luscious colors, rich textures, painterly marks - all inspired by our love of travel and especially the bits that come home with you. Our wallpapers are produced in Bantam, CT, by a beautiful, family-run, artistic printer. They are celebratory of the design process AND focused on doing good for the earth, using locally sourced materials and low-waste printing and shipping methods.
DP: How do you describe and define your personal style?
JE: My own style is classic, with a twist. I love clean lines, comfortable and lived in spaces, with a lot of personal story thrown in. Collections of books, rocks, memorabilia that speaks to me. Heavy sprinklings of color layered against rich, textured neutrals. In both my space and my closet - that’s what you’ll see.
