STYLE PROFILE: Allison Feuer Design
Creating a landscape design that strikes the right balance between form and function is like creating a living work of art. It takes a vast knowledge of plants, an eye for texture and color, and a drive to create. Allison Feuer is a wardrobe and prop stylist who took her design knowledge of texture and color and applied it to her lifelong passion for landscaping and gardening. To further her education, she earned a landscape design certificate from the New York Botanical Garden. We love Feuer’s unique combination of refined style, sophistication, and her easy-to-grasp gardening tips. Feuer says, “it’s more than flowers and lush plantings— it’s about connections to my father and grandmother, who were avid gardeners, and to the soil.” Read on for our quick Q&A and read to the end to watch some quick gardening tips from Feuer.

Q&A with Allison Feuer
How do you describe your personal style?
I’m a blend between modern and classic. I have a deep appreciation of classic design and history. I love classic references in the garden. I also love modern art, fashion and architecture.
We're in the middle of the summer, is it too late to plant?
YES, it is. Now is the time to plan for fall plantings! It is too hot now to plant trees and shrubs. Wait until fall when it cools down a bit and plants can establish themselves without stress.
And don’t forget, no matter the time of year, Deep Root watering is what creates strong roots. This is the process of injecting water below the soil surface directly into the root zone, as with a slow drip hose.
What people, places, or things inspire you?
Every time I travel I take in a new garden, architecture and ideas. I am a sucker for hedges in the Hamptons, meadows in Colorado and flora in Miami. Edmund Hollander is a landscape architect who always inspires me.
What’s something every novice gardener in Connecticut needs to know?
Deer! They will eat almost anything. Allium, boxwood and nepeta are deer proof winners!
