STYLE PROFILE: Spinpin Creative
Spring is here! As the world outside turns back to full color, we turn to Debra Spindler Pinals, the founder of Spinpin Creative, for advice on using color at home. She’s a professionally trained color consultant and an interior designer who advises on everything from simple home refresh to a renovation or new build. Her design style is fresh, modern, eclectic, comfortable, and of course, always features pops of color. Designport sat down with Debra to get the inside scoop:
DP: Your passion for design is contagious. Tell us more about your sweet spot?
Pinals: My superpower is color and using it to transform a space. Did you know that every decision you make for your home is a color decision? I help my clients make the right choices regarding color by determining neutral undertones and ensuring that the materials, finishes, and colors chosen will work together to create a cohesive palette.
DP: When did you develop an interest in design, and what were you doing before this?
Pinals: Growing up, my parents built a house in Woodstock, NY, and they were always taking me to these unique homes, galleries, shops, and craft shows in the area. I was always so interested in the design process and connecting with the artists we met, and I have always loved to draw and create. In college, I studied communication design and went on to a career in the graphic arts; book and magazine publishing, visual branding, promotional design, and I also owned a stationery business.
DP: Where did you build your skills?
Pinals: At a crossroads in my decades-long career as a graphic designer/art director, I took a leap and merged my passion for color and interiors with my creative background. To start, I studied around the clock to become both a Certified Interior Designer (Parsons University) and Certified Color Consultant (Maria Killam Color Academy) while immersing myself in every learning opportunity available. I then began to offer interior styling and color consulting services. I am so grateful for each opportunity to guide my clients as they update their surroundings and create their happy place.
DP: What interior designers are you inspired by?
Pinals: I have a significant design crush on Raili Clasen. She impeccably infuses color, pattern, modern lines, eccentricity, and humor into her work. I also endlessly scroll Sarah Sherman Samuel's social feeds because I'm drawn to how she mixes interesting shapes in fresh and unexpected ways.
DP: What are a few of your favorite furniture and accessory brands?
Pinals: IntiEarth, Wallace & Sewell, Raiz Unique Objects, Block Shop Textiles, and Leah Singh are just a few of my favorite accessory brands; handmade and unique items that are textural, with organic shapes and varied colorways.
DP: Anything else fun you want people to know about you?
Pinals: I live in Weston, CT, with my husband, Jeff, and our super-dog Kodi, who both fill up our newly empty nest with lots of laughter. I am an amateur photographer who loves hiking up high peaks, museum hopping, shopping for unique handmade decor, looking for rainbows, and repainting everyone's front door a happy color.
