About
Hoblyn & Co. is a landscape and outdoor design company founded by Penelope Hoblyn, who grew up in County Wicklow, a.k.a, the Garden of Ireland. With her degree in Physical Geography and English, a lifelong eye for good design, and an avid gardener, it’s not surprising she has been dubbed “The Queen of Clean & Green.” Her projects reveal a love of strong lines, simple color palettes, and spaces that offer sanctuary while remaining very practical.
Hoblyn says, “our style is simple & elegant, mainly using green and white plant material to create a restful garden. Our clients are very busy and they should come home to a peaceful space that makes them exhale! We not only design a master plan, work with partner companies to build your dream space but we also furnish it too.”
Hoblyn is a graduate of the University College Cork Graduate (BA), University of Connecticut (AMG), and the New York Botanical Garden School for Horticulture & Landscape Design (SHLD).

Q&A
What types of projects excite you? And what are you hoping to do more of?
Unless we are doing new construction, in which we need to get clients out of the “mud phase,” most of our clients are multi-year. It’s often hard for people to envision the end result but it is most gratifying to get pictures from clients using their space or of their up-lit trees that look amazing in the snow, just like we said it would! I would like to incorporate more art and outdoor sculptures in our projects and cool outdoor structures to create destinations and rooms for our clients.
What people, places, or things inspire you?
I might be a slight hedge fanatic and have way too many pics on my phone as I am driving places. I am determined to get to the Chelsea Flower Show in London at least once but it always falls smack in the middle of Spring planting season. Inspiration from other places plants-wise doesn’t mean it's going to grow here and with climate change, including storm and water management, invasive bugs & diseases, we have to tweak designs all the time. Fire resistant plantings will be a topic in the not too distant future here, I’m sure.
I’m a big Ed Hollander fan, Luciano Giubbilei, Pierre Guillot and more locally Kathryn Herman and my fellow Irishman James Doyle. Less is more for me. I adore Sutherland furniture and New Yorks’ Munder Skiles, the simplicity of their work is pure understated elegance.
What’s your favorite garden you’ve ever done and why?
I’m currently two years into a very special garden that had very mature landscaping on it before my clients built their dream home. I had worked on their previous home and know how they live and what makes them happy. I am known for not removing anything unnecessarily so I am proud that we have only removed a few trees that were diseased or dead. I have however moved quite a few large trees with cranes around the property to give them a new home! So, a lot of the changes look like they’ve always been there and I am very excited to see all the new material grow in.
