Color Pop Kitchen Glow Up

Bursts of bright color are what Debra and her husband Jeffrey had in mind when they renovated their kitchen. The home, a 1980's Contemporary in Weston with an open floor plan, had lots of natural light, white walls, and pops of color throughout, so they wanted a seamless transition to the kitchen.

Debra’s non-negotiable was open shelving: she wanted the kitchen to feel like a true living space. As a professional color consultant and designer, she was able to mock up the shelf decor in Photoshop first to make sure all the items worked cohesively. “Things that make me happy” says Debra, are “pops of bright color, especially orange and mint, and items that have a personal meaning. At the end of the day, that’s how anyone should feel at home.” The original Dansk dishes and yellow casseroles are the pieces Debra grew up with and were a gift from her mom. The Graffiti art is a vacation photograph printed on canvas. Other pieces were collected at craft fairs and travels over the years.

Removing the upper cabinetry meant picking up storage in other spaces. More usable and easy access storage came in the form of deep drawers under the new banquette seating area, vertical cabinetry, and island storage.

While the kitchen decor is playfully eclectic, the design is timeless, with white stacked tiles, white cabinetry with simple pulls, wood floors, and white countertops. The colorful items can easily be changed on a whim. No doubt Debra’s next whim will be equally colorful and fun!
